Is it (relatively) safe to deploy a MHN server locally, segmented into its own VLAN, which connects to a sensor on a cloud?

I know it's usually not a great idea to deploy a full MHN stack on your local network just in case the bad guys were able to pry in, but is it relatively safe to have the server locally while deploying the sensors in the cloud?

I don't have a ton of money for a cloud subscription, and I also have an up board sitting around that I can't figure out what to do with, so I figured I could potentially use one of the free AWS instances for a sensor and the up board as the server.

Am I setting myself up to get hacked to pieces?
