How dangerous is it to allow Android apps to connect/update/phone home on public WiFi (without VPN)?

When I connect to home WiFi, for time to time an app will send/receive some data when I'm not using it. Just wondering if this would be dangerous on public WiFi with, for example a banking app? I don't mean actually using a banking app (entering login info, etc) I just mean allowing it access to public WiFi.
